#ROCKTHEBLOCK 1st Annual Sneaker Donation Drive For Newark's Needy #FestivalSeason in partnership with Prudential Center

In July 2016, the 11th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival expanded our Sustainable Health and Wellness Village (SHWV) from its roots as a "mini-festival" within LPMF, to a series of events leading up to the festival, where the whole city had the opportunity to get involved, get active and get moving toward a healthier lifestyle! Part of our SHWV efforts included the collection of sneakers for Newark's needy in partnership with Prudential Center.

The Prudential Center supported LPCCD's Autism Walk on May 22, the Music Speaks: Rock The Shot photography program, the Lincoln Park Music Festival Kids Zone Village and more. We began at Music Speaks: Music Festival in July and, our partner Prudential Center, held their own internal sneaker drive. Together, we collected nearly 8 boxes and barrels of "kicks" for our fellow Newarkers in need.

On Friday, September 9th, The City of Newark, Catholic Charities and Bridges Outreach presented I.M.P.A.C.T Day in Lincoln Park, a day of services for the needy and homeless. Together with our partner Prudential Center, we donated our boxes of footwear at this event.

LINCOLN PARK CULTURAL COAST DISTRICT WRAPS UP ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL LINCOLN PARK MUSIC FESTIVAL!

The 11th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival wrapped up its spectacular annual celebration of spirit, music and dance. Hosted by Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD), the highly anticipated festival included a series of concerts, performances and special events throughout the city of Newark. This year's festival season featured Dr. Cissy Houston, Zuri Marley, Ann Nesby, Savion Glover, Tom Browne, DJ Marley Marl, DMC World Championship DJs, RES and more. The festival weekend was ohosted by Alex Hill (WBGO), Liz Black (WLIB), Bugsy (WBLS), Miss Theresa and Eddie Nicholas, Miss Nana, Drew Ski (Hot 97) and DoItAll of Lords of the Underground.

The 11th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival month opened July 6th, with the return of its groundbreaking Jazzy Soul Series, at Hotel Indigo's SKYLAB. Jazzy Soul Series is a cabaret-style show of live musical performances featuring up-and-coming underground artists. The three artists featured last month were critically acclaimed neo-soul artist RES, jazz/soul singer Hendii and Honeycomb Records artist Lamone.

The celebration continued on Saturday, July 23rd with a special lighting ceremony of the landmark Lincoln Park Church Facade, also known as the old South Park Presbyterian Church. The lighting of the Facade was made possible with the support of the City of Newark, PSE&G, Turner Construction, Big Color Printing, RAB Lighting, The American Society of Interior Designers New Jersey Chapter (ASIDNJ), the leading organization for interior design professionals; D.C. Electrical Contractors and United Airlines.

The ceremony, which was held in honor of the City of Newark's 350th Anniversary, was followed by the opening night of the pop up exhibit "Lincoln Park Music Festival: Decade One" at City Without Walls Gallery featuring the first-time ever performance of Zuri Marley of the legendary Marley family.

THE 11TH ANNUAL LINCOLN PARK MUSIC FESTIVAL KICKS OFF A NEW DECADE WITH THE LIGHTING OF THE LANDMARK LINCOLN PARK CHURCH FAÇADE (OLD SOUTH PARK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH)

The 11th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival (LPMF) kicks off on Saturday, July 23rd with the lighting of the landmark Lincoln Park Church Façade in honor of the City of Newark’s 350th Anniversary Celebration. Following the lighting of the Façade after dusk is the official after party featuring a live performance by Zuri Marley for the first time ever at Lincoln Park. "I applaud the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District on celebrating this 11th year milestone of providing great music and fun for families and visitors alike," said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. "This musical experience is near and dear to me as my father, Amiri Baraka, participated in past festivals and treasured this event. The Lincoln Park Music Festival has become an important part of our city’s history and is a highlight of Newark’s 350th Anniversary celebration. Folks who visit Newark during the weekend of the festival, look forward to great food, non-stop fun for the whole family, and continuous music that makes you sing, shout, and dance all weekend long. I'm looking forward to celebrating the music festival's 11th year.”

The latest project from Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD), is the South Park Calvary Presbyterian Church (SPCPC) façade located at 1033 Broad Street, Newark, NJ. Built in 1855, Abraham Lincoln spoke on the steps of SPCPC in 1861 on his way to his first inauguration. Once the center of the abolitionist movement and racial integration in Newark, SPCPC became a “soup kitchen” before burning down in 1992—leaving only a striking eight-story high blue sandstone Greek Revival façade on a half acre site.

“Time was right to start this project”, said Anthony Smith, Executive Director of LPCCD. “With all eyes on Newark during the high profile, citywide 350th anniversary celebration, it made sense to shine a light on this historic building and the Lincoln Park neighborhood that we serve. The lighting of The Façade, our 2nd annual Jazzy Soul Series at Hotel Indigo Newark (featuring performances by singers RES, Hendii and Lamone), in addition to the re-launch of our traveling arts and cultural program Music Speaks, and the recently completed, cutting edge, Lincoln Park Washington Street Mural, all serve as LPCCD’s continued leadership in development of the Southern corridor of Broad Street, and the surrounding neighborhoods. Honoring our heritage in the arts, Lincoln Park continues to be a major player in the curation of nightlife and entertainment in downtown Newark.”

Church Facade Rendering

LPCCD is converting The Façade into a 600+ person outdoor performance venue, which will include a stage for musical performances and an urban farm with a greenhouse, hydroponics and to source the concession-stand during performances and provide vegetables for locals. The Façade is poised to become the center of the emerging artist movement in Newark and the cultural revitalization efforts in the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District. The lighting of the Façade was made possible with the support of the City of Newark, PSEG, Turner Construction, Big Color Printing, NAB Lighting, The American Society of Interior Designers New Jersey Chapter (ASIDNJ), the leading organization for interior design professionals; D. C. Electrical Contractors and United Airlines.

The First Ever Lincoln Park #RockTheBlock Sustainable Art Block Party

We Rocked the Block!

We hosted our first Sustainable Art Block Party on Saturday, June 11t. Following the morning clean up, we were joined by Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Central Ward Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins, Newark Celebration 350 and the Newark Arts Council to formally unveil the Lincoln Park Washington Street mural. Created by local Newark artist Turf Warz under the guidance of Rodney Gilbert's Yendor Productions, the mural's vibrant theme "Culture Bubbles Up From the Bottom" is reflected in the waves of colorful hues that emanate from the concrete to the sky. The dedication was followed by performances from YOPAT's Dr. Cissy Houston Academy, and other local residents such as Sean Battle and the Evolve NJ Poets, singer Johnny Culver and residents of Integrity House.

Hope to see you next year at #RockTheBlock!

We Walk for Autism Awareness

According to the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Autism and Development Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, "About 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)". We also know that, according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, "African-American children and other children of color are among the worst-affected" often due to delayed diagnosis and/or misdiagnosis.

As you know, the role and contribution of sustainable and health & wellness is key in community building. This holistic approach includes not only physical wellness, but environmental, emotional and mental wellness also. Further, we understand the importance of health and wellness in communities of color, especially when we talk about Autism.

LINCOLN PARK MUSIC SPEAKS Relaunches with author Raqiyah Mays

On Saturday, April 16th, 2016, Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District officially launched the first event in its Music Speaks humanities series entitled Rock Your Soul, our official partnership program of the Newark 350th Celebration, with journalist, actress, activist, WBLS 107.5 FM on-air personality and new author Raqiyah Mays, whose debut novel The Man Curse is out now on Simon and Schuster digital. For Raqiyah, this milestone held special meaning . "My immediate family is from Newark. I still have family living and working in Newark. It was fitting to share and celebrate the birth of my newest baby, The Man Curse, in the place where I was born that also happens to be celebrating 350 years of its own birth" says Mays.

Raqiyah Mays, Author, The Man Curse

This past weekend, Music Speaks: Rock Your Soul was highlighted with the retweeted hashtags #LPCCDMusicSpeaks and #RockYourSoul. But the day's worth of activities were so much more. With a focus on literature, Music Speaks: Rock Your Soul began with an Afternoon of Empowerment hosted in the West ward's Providence Missionary Baptist Church, and co-presented by our partners Babyland Family Services, Inc., Newark Circle of Sisters, The Brickerati, and Newark Arts Council. A group of woman gathered together for an author reading and interactive talk back around issues presented in Mays' The Man Curse, a self-fiction novel which touches on generational cycles like domestic violence. Leading the discussion, based on the book, was Stephanie Smith, M.S.W., President of Vesta Project.

That evening at Music Speaks: Rock Your Soul, the official book release for Raqiyah Mays The Man Curse, co-hosted by Newark Arts Council, In A Word Fab, The Brickerati, Newark Circle of Sisters and Tammi LaMorn of Taste Venue, Newarkers rocked out The Taste Venue with a live performance by JaE, who is best described as a cross between Lenny Kravitz and Lauryn Hill. This high-heeled guitar slayer, singer/songwriter and her all girl band definitely brought a funky, soul-fueled rock vibe to LPCCD's Music Speaks.

Attendees grooved to the tunes of DJ Just Love while sampling the "Rock Your Soul" and "Meena-tini" drink specials inspired by a character in The Man Curse. "It was a beautiful full day of inspiration," says Mays. "From the afternoon, being able to work with Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District to empower courageous women through my "Leading You to Love" workshop, to the evening's book release party, where I felt so much love and support from those effectively working to rebuild Newark. Truly amazing."
